Minister Continues to Push for Action on Home Invasions

Justice

Nova Scotia hands out the toughest sentences for home invasions in the country and Justice Minister Michael Baker wants it to stay that way.

"I firmly believe a new offence for this heinous type of crime is needed, and I will continue to push the federal justice minister for changes to the Criminal Code," said Mr. Baker.

Mr. Baker first raised the issue at a recent meeting of federal, provincial and territorial justice ministers held in Vancouver. At the time, he reminded the federal minister that a new offence would underscore the seriousness of this type of crime and would acknowledge the devastating impact it has on its victims -- particularly seniors. He received widespread support from his provincial counterparts.

The issue is now being examined by senior officials at the provincial and federal levels, who are expected to report on possible legislative changes in the spring.

Recently, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal upheld a 15-year sentence for a home invasion which occurred in downtown Halifax.

"This province is leading the country in sentencing for home invasions," said Mr. Baker. "The federal government must now demonstrate leadership and provide the action that is necessary."

Along with stiffer sentences, Mr. Baker is also developing a public education program for seniors. Tips on home safety and security will be part of the program designed to provide practical advice for seniors living at home.
