West Mabou Beach Will Remain Park Reserve

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The government of Nova Scotia will retain the entire West Mabou Beach property as park reserve. Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage said today the decision is based on the unique values of the site and other information received.

"West Mabou beach has a significant coastal beach and dune system, rare plants and outstanding scenic views," said Mr. Fage. "Based on the uniqueness of West Mabou, my government has decided the whole property should be retained for its ecological integrity and values."

There was a proposal to develop part of the site, but Mr. Fage said the government decided the ecological value of the land had to be protected.

"This was a difficult decision and all factors were considered," he explained. "I want to thank all the people who provided input about this piece of Crown land. This property has a uniqueness that should be protected and maintained."

West Mabou beach comprises approximately 215 hectares of land on the western coast of Cape Breton Island. This is the only piece of Crown land that provides access along that coastline, the minister added. The role of the Department of Natural Resources is to evaluate all Crown land and balance the needs and uses of these lands.
