Policing Plan Approved

Justice

After a careful and comprehensive review, Justice Minister Michael Baker today advised the Cape Breton Regional Municipality that the proposed policing plan for the municipality may proceed.

In a letter to council the minister advised he will give the required notice to the federal solicitor general of the change in the provincial police force.

"After meeting with the provincially funded facilitator, council decided that a further review was not necessary, and their decision should stand. I have no choice but to respect that decision," said Mr. Baker. "My role is to ensure an adequate and effective level of policing is maintained. I am satisfied that level has been met, with the assurance the municipality will fund the engineering costs required to ensure their communications system is IWAN compatible."

The minister also noted that staff will work with the municipality and the RCMP to ensure a smooth transition process occurs.
