Minister Reacts to Firearms Decision

Justice

The Supreme Court of Canada's decision that the federal Firearms Act is constitutional was greeted with disappointment by Justice Minister Michael Baker.

In a unanimous decision, nine Supreme Court justices ruled against the challenge put forward by six provinces and two territories, including Nova Scotia.

"We fulfilled our commitment to the people of the province in joining with Alberta to challenge the law," said Mr. Baker. "We must now respect the decision of the Supreme Court."

Mr. Baker noted that he will continue to push the federal government to be flexible in the implementation of the act. It is expected the federal government will announce, later today, plans to streamline the registration process and lower fees.

"It's time the federal government listened to the concerns of the provinces, and took steps to correct the significant problems relating to registration," said Mr. Baker. "The Nova Scotia government continues to support responsible and cost-effective measures to reduce the criminal use of firearms, but we will continue to push for major change in the administrative area."
