Service N.S./Municipal Relations--Province Extends Fuel Assistance Deadline

The provincial government is extending the application deadline for the Low Income Fuel Assistance Program to March 31. Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations said government wants to give Nova Scotians more time to apply.

"We want every eligible Nova Scotian to have the chance to apply for assistance under this program," said Mr. MacIsaac. "We want to help those in need and we're prepared to take extra steps to make sure that happens."

The provincial Low Income Fuel Assistance Program provides $50 to seniors who receive the guaranteed income supplement or spouse's allowance, families with a net income of $16,500 or less, and single people earning $9,500 or less. To date, just over 11,000 applications have been received. Last year, more than 14,000 Nova Scotians applied to this program.

"If people don't have all the proper documents to complete their application, like their income tax assessment forms, our staff can help," Mr. MacIsaac said. Applicants can sign a consent form that allows staff to obtain the information from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

Applications are available at all Access Nova Scotia centres, Registry of Motor Vehicles locations and Department of Community Services offices. Applications can also be downloaded from the government Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr . Complete applications will be processed within two weeks, as long as all information is included.
