Fencing Assistance for Livestock Producers

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Again this year, assistance is available to help Nova Scotia farmers in their efforts to keep livestock out of wetlands and waterways.

The Eastern Habitat Joint Venture, through the Department of Natural Resources, is accepting applications for the 2001 Fencing Program.

Funding assistance of up to 40 per cent of the total cost of a project to a maximum of $5,000, may be available for livestock producers. Relevant projects can include fencing wetlands and some watercourses, stream crossings and alternative or controlled watering systems.

“The departments of Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Fisheries are happy to support this program,” said Mr. Fage. “It is a good example of many different groups successfully working together toward one common goal. Since 1997, this program has funded 48 projects, assisting livestock producers in securing about 390 hectares of wetlands.”

The program focuses on establishing buffer zones between pasture lands and wetlands, or pertinent watercourses, by restricting livestock access to these areas. Funding for the program is provided by the partners in the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.

For more information, or to apply, contact the local Natural Resources office or the regional office of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, or call 902-679-6145.

The deadline for applications is May 18.
