SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Sewer Services to be Installed in Beaver Bank

Four hundred residences in the Beaver Bank area of the Halifax Regional Municipality will soon be fully connected to Halifax Regional Municipality sewage collection system. The extension project is funded through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint funding, in the amount of $4 million, was announced today as one of 22 project approvals totalling more than $21.8 million, by Robert G. Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Barry Barnet, MLA for Sackville-Beaver Bank, on behalf of Angus MacIssac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"The intent of the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is to upgrade and improve municipal infrastructure systems in Nova Scotia," said Mr. Barnet. "To the residents of Sackville-Beaver Bank, this project resolves a long-standing issue in the community."

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in year one will be directed to green projects, like the Beaver Bank Area Sewage Collection project.

"The Government of Canada is committed to building strong communities and improving our quality of life," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we're investing in green projects that address our highest priorities -- the water we drink and the air we breathe."

This $6 million project is for the extension of municipal sewer services to the Beaver Bank area. Completion of the sewer project will see 400 existing and new households become connected to municipal wastewater collection. This will create a higher level of community safety, virtually eliminating the risk of contamination from on-site sewage disposal systems. The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Halifax Regional Municipality, which will fund the balance of the project costs.

"This project will greatly benefit the residents in the Beaver Bank area," said Peter Kelly, Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality. "It will certainly improve the quality of life while protecting the environment."

This is the first in a series of approval announcements for projects nominated by municipalities under the program. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
