SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Parrsboro Obtains a Water Distribution Upgrade

Residents in Parrsboro will be seeing improvements in their water distribution system with a water pipe replacement project funded through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding, in the amount of $385,000, was announced today as one of 14 project approvals totalling more than $14.1 million. The announcement was made by Murray Scott, MLA for Cumberland South, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations and Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

"Supplying safe and reliable water service to Nova Scotia communities is a top priority of the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program," said Mr. Scott.

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in the first year will be directed to green projects, like the improved water distribution in Parrsboro.

"The Government of Canada is making infrastructure a top priority in our communities," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are investing in green projects that will improve our quality of life through safe drinking water and a cleaner enviroment."

The $577,500 Parrsboro Water Distribution Upgrade project will replace 2440 metres of water piping along Two Island Road, Old West Bay/Pinky Creek Road, and Farrell Road. The project will bring improved water flow to 61 households in the town resulting in better water pressure and higher-quality fire protection.

"There is no substitute for the safety of citizens," said Douglas Robinson, mayor of Parrsboro. "We are confident that the completion of this project will bring enhanced health and safety benefits for all of the residents of Parrsboro."

The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Town of Parrsboro, which will fund the balance of the project.

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program totalling more than $39 million to date. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
