SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Green Infrastructure Projects Slated for MacIntosh Run and Maplewood

Residents of the MacIntosh Run area of Spryfield will see improved sewer services and Maplewood on the Lakes subdivision residents will soon be connected to municipal water services thanks to two projects funded by the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding for the projects, in the amount of $966,666, was announced today by Geoff Regan, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, on behalf of Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Barry Barnet, MLA for Sackville-Beaver Bank, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"We are honouring our commitment to work with municipalities to develop solutions to their infrastructure needs," said Mr. Barnet. "We are proud to be a partner in this program."

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in the first year will be directed to green projects, like the MacIntosh Run sewer upgrades and the Maplewood water service project.

"These projects show the commitment the government of Canada is making to improve local infrastructure," said Mr. Regan. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are able to bring municipal water and sewer services to more homes in Halifax Regional Municipality, bolstering our quality of life and the health of our community."

The MacIntosh Run project will provide for sanitary sewer upgrades along MacIntosh Run from Old Sambro Road to Herring Cove Road, connecting 200 additional households to municipal sewer services. Total cost for the project is $1,000,000.

The Maplewood on the Lakes subdivision will benefit from a water services project that will provide 40 households access to clean, safe municipal water services. Total cost for the project is $450,000.

"Extending water services to Maplewood by bringing the Pockwock water supply to residents' doorsteps and improving the operation of the municipality's sewer system in the vicinity of MacIntosh Run will result in important health and environmental benefits," said Peter Kelly, mayor of Halifax Regional Municiplaity.

The federal and provincial funding for the projects under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Halifax Regional Municipality, which will fund the balance of the projects.

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program totalling over $41 million to date. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
