SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Province Invests in Mulgrave Water Improvement Project

Residents of the town of Mulgrave will soon benefit from improvements to the local water supply, jointly funded by the province of Nova Scotia and the town.

Ron Chisholm, MLA for Guysborough-Port Hawkesbury, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, announced the government's support under the Provincial Capital Assistance Program. The cost of the $201,500 project will be shared evenly between the province and the town.

"We made a commitment to work with the municipalities to address local needs," said Mr. Chisholm. "By investing in Mulgrave, we are making it easier for the town to protect the health and safety of its residents and businesses."

The $201,500 water distribution system upgrade project will replace two sections of waterline, both of which are 30 years old. The 2500 linear ft. asbestos cement water main, which runs along Highway 344, will be replaced with a new plastic waterline. The 700 linear ft. cast iron waterline, which runs along Mill Street, will be replaced with a new plastic waterline.

Completion of this project will improve water quality and water pressure throughout Mulgrave, as well as reduce repair and maintenance costs.

The Nova Scotia government recognizes that the cost of undertaking water supply, sewer disposal and solid waste management projects can place significant financial burdens on municipal governments and taxpayers alike. The Provincial Capital Assistance Program is designed to enable the province to share the cost of high-priority municipal infrastructure projects.
