Today's Events in the U.S.

Premier's Office

In the wake of the today's events in the United States, Nova Scotians are ready to help, if needed.

Although Nova Scotia has not been asked yet, the province is assessing its resources and will be ready to provide assistance. Staff in government departments are meeting this afternoon to prepare, in the event that assistance is requested.

"Nova Scotians extend their condolences to everyone impacted by today's tragic events," said Premier John Hamm, who was in contact with Prime Minister Jean Chretien this morning.

"I let Prime Minister Chretien know Nova Scotia is prepared to provide any support or assistance it can to help deal with this disaster."

The Red Cross is responding to inquiries regarding international travellers and Nova Scotia citizens who may be on international flights. The toll free number to call is 1-800-222-9597.

The Department of Tourism and Culture said its Check In reservation system has already identified at least 600 available rooms and that work continues. The Check In toll-free line is 1-800-565-0000. International flights have been diverted to Canadian airports from U.S. destinations.

"Our focus right now is to gather an inventory of rooms available," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture. "We are as prepared as we can be to respond to calls. Our goal would be to make people as comfortable as we can should they arrive in Nova Scotia and require accommodation."
