Woodlot Owner of the Year Field Day

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources will host the eleventh annual Woodlot Owner of the Year Field Day on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at the woodlot owned by Don and Katy Moore, this year's Woodlot Owners of the Year. The lot is located off the Northfield Road in Upper Kennetcook.

Natural Resources Minster Ernest Fage will officially present the award to Don and Katy Moore. The presentation ceremonies are scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. on the woodlot.

"This is a great opportunity for the public to see responsible forest management," said Mr. Fage. "It is also an opportunity to honour the Moores and congratulate them on their successful management of our forest resources."

During the day's events media and the public will have an opportunity to spend time with the Moores to discuss their many woodlot projects, including newly constructed walking trails. The day promises to be both informative and entertaining, with many field displays and demonstrations taking place on site, such as: -- woodlot projects implemented by the Moores; -- small scale harvesting equipment such as tractors and ATVs; -- horse and wagon rides; -- horse and oxen logging; -- a pre-commercial thinning demonstration; and -- a planting demonstration.

The field day is also an excellent chance to gain insight into the various components of forest land ecosystems and forest management practices. Department of Natural Resources officials will have displays and answer questions on woodlot education, ponds, tree insects and diseases, the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, portable camps, ecotourism, and forest sustainability programs.

"I would like to extend an invitation to the public to come and see the good things that are happening on our private woodlands in Nova Scotia," said Mr. Fage.
