SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Baddeck Sewage Treatment Plant Receives $2.2 Million Upgrade

The Village of Baddeck will receive a $2.2-million upgrade to its sewage treatment plant in a project funded by the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding of $1,483,266 was announced today by Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, and Mark Eyking, MP for Sydney-Victoria, on behalf of Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The Municipality of the County of Victoria will fund the balance of the project.

"People in Baddeck -- like everywhere else in Canada -- want safe drinking water and sewage treatment plants that will protect the environment," said Mr. MacIsaac. "Our investment in this project will make Baddeck a healthier, safer and, ultimately, a more prosperous place."

"The government of Canada is committed to projects that improve quality of life for Nova Scotians," said Mr. Eyking. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are investing in green projects that contribute to creating strong healthy communities with quality drinking water and a clean environment."

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in Year One will be directed to green projects, like Baddeck's sewage treatment plant upgrade.

The $2,224,900 project is designed to increase the Baddeck sewage plant's treatment capacity and improve the collection system. The enhancement of the system will treat sewage to levels that will greatly reduce the risk of harm to the Bras d'Or Lakes. This project addresses and accommodates Baddeck's expected growth in both year-round residency and tourism facilities in the next 15 to 20 years. The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Municipality of the County of Victoria.

"Baddeck is ready for significant residential and tourism growth in the coming years, and a good wastewater infrastructure is an essential factor in successfully accommodating our expansion," said Gerald Sampson, warden, Municipality of the County of Victoria. "This project will make that growth a reality."

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program totalling more than $43 million to date. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities are represented on the program's management committee.
