Fire Season Extended

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage today announced that burning permits will be required for an additional two weeks this year. Due to the extension of the fire season, permits will be needed until Oct. 31.

"This is the first time the department has had to extend the fire season", said Mr. Fage. "The unusually warm and dry fall days, coupled with the already parched soil and ground fuels from the summer, make the extension necessary."

Although the shorter days and the cooler temperatures at night have assisted with moisture levels, heavy rainfalls are needed to lower the risk of fire. According to the information gathered from across the province, the fire weather index ranges from high/moderate to high. This indicates the significant level of risk for forest fires resulting from small, uncontrolled burning.

Over this past week, fire fighters battled high winds and dry fuel in 10 forest fires across the province. With these types of conditions there is an increased risk of fires becoming uncontrollable and spreading rapidly. The public is asked to abide by the extension and obtain permits before burning.

"The Department of Natural Resources has had a very busy fire season to date," said Mr. Fage. "The public's support is requested for the remainder of the fire season, and throughout the year."

The public is asked to contact local offices of the Department of Natural Resources for more information on acquiring burning permits.
