Nova Scotians in Loop on Consumer Issues

SERVICE N.S/MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Nova Scotians in Loop on Consumer Issues

Nova Scotia is part of a new Canada-wide, Internet-based consumer service unveiled today in Toronto.

The Canadian Consumer Information Gateway delivers tips and suggestions from hundreds of government agencies across the country. It will help consumers find the information they need when they need it.

The site offers consumer protection tips and information about product recalls, how to protect yourself from frauds and scam artists, how to preserve your on-line privacy and other topics.

"The gateway will go a long way towards helping Nova Scotians and other Canadians to access important consumer information from governments and their partners," said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

Mr. MacIsaac said that Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations -- like many cutting-edge organizations -- relies more and more on Internet technology to deliver information and services.

The Canadian Consumer Information Gateway is a unique partnership that promotes Canadian consumer interests and awareness. Hundreds of government organizations are involved. Selected non- governmental organizations will join in the future, further enhancing its value.

With so many departments and agencies responsible for different aspects of consumer issues, finding the right information or the right contact can be a daunting task. This information portal, which acts as a table of contents for the many government sites, can help the public more easily find consumer information services from the different levels of government.

The gateway is another example of how jurisdictions across the country are working together to protect consumers. In the past year, most federal, provincial and territorial governments have revamped their credit laws and alerted consumers to new Internet- based scams.
