Justice Minister Responds to Kaufman Review

Justice

In responding to the Kaufman report today, Justice Minister Michael Baker said the compensation process for victims of institutional abuse was flawed. He said that government has learned from the report and is committed to bringing closure to this issue as soon as possible.

Mr. Kaufman was appointed in 1999 to review the former government's response to allegations of institutional abuse. He presented his report in January 2001 and provided a blueprint on future redress programs.

"Today, I accept Mr. Kaufman's challenge to learn from past mistakes," said Mr. Baker.

The minister introduced Brian Johnston, of Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales, who is providing advice on a response to concerns from current and past employees. He also reported on progress made to date.
