Fencing Assistance for Livestock Producers

Farmers can apply again this year for assistance to keep livestock out of wetlands and waterways on their properties.

The Eastern Habitat Joint Venture, through the Department of Natural Resources, is accepting applications for the 2002 Fencing Program.

Funding up to 40 per cent of the total cost of a project, to a maximum of $5,000, may be available to livestock producers. Projects that could be eligible for funding include fencing wetlands and some watercourses and installing alternative or controlled watering systems.

"The departments of Natural Resources and Agriculture and Fisheries are happy to support this program," said Ernest Fage, who is minister of both departments. "It is a good example of many different groups successfully working together toward one common goal of conserving wetlands."

Since 1997, this program has funded 60 projects, assisting livestock producers in securing 680 hectares of wetlands.

The program focuses on establishing buffer zones between pasture lands and wetlands or watercourses by keeping livestock from these areas. Funding for the program is provided by the partners in the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.
