Input Sought on Sprinkler System Requirements

SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Input Sought on Sprinkler System Requirements

Nova Scotians are invited to comment on proposed changes to provincial building code requirements for sprinkler systems. Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations released a discussion paper on the topic today, May 17.

Sprinkler system regulations have been in force since 1976, however, there are differences between the national and provincial building code requirements. For example, the National Building Code allows trade-offs for other fire protection and fire department access provisions that are not included in the Nova Scotia code.

The objective of the discussion paper is to remove these differences and develop common requirements between the codes. To achieve this, the discussion paper recommends adopting the national code and eliminating the provincial requirements.

The Nova Scotia Building Code Advisory Committee wishes to hear from interested parties on the paper's recommendations before considering what course of action it would recommend.

A copy of the consultation paper is available on the department's Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/muns/code/sprinkler/ or by calling 902-424-3872.
