Queen's Counsel Appointments Named

Justice

Justice Minister Michael Baker today announced the appointment of 18 lawyers as Queen's counsel.

The appointees are:

  • Deborah Gillis, Bedford
  • Maj.-Gen. Jerry Pitzul, Ottawa
  • Bruce Russell, Halifax
  • Bernadette MacDonald, Halifax
  • Patrick Cassidy, Halifax
  • Brian Downie, Halifax
  • Arthur Barry, Halifax
  • Lorraine Lafferty, Halifax
  • Lorne MacDowell, Port Hawkesbury
  • Michael Brooker, Wolfville
  • Ronald MacDonald, Antigonish
  • John Rogers, Halifax
  • Kimberley Turner, Halifax
  • Valerie Miller, Halifax

"While 12 individuals are usually appointed, I am pleased to appoint six additional Queen's counsel in honour of Her Majesty's jubilee year," said Mr. Baker. "All appointees have demonstrated an exceptional degree of professional integrity, dedication and leadership to their profession."

The criteria which must be met by the appointees include:
professional integrity; outstanding contributions to the practice of law; an exceptional contribution through teaching or continuing legal education; demonstration of exceptional qualities of leadership in the profession; or engaging in activities of a public or charitable nature in such a way as to raise the esteem in which the legal profession is held by the public.

Recommendations were made by an advisory committee chaired by Chief Justice Joseph Kennedy. Additional members included: Robert Belliveau, Q.C.; Jamie Campbell, Q.C.; Roberta Clarke, Q.C.; Guy LaFosse, Q.C.; Dr. Daureen Lewis; Carmen McCormick, Q.C.; David Wallace, Q.C.; Derek Wells, Q.C.; and William Wilson, Q.C.
