New Wheels Unveiled

Justice

You'll know them when you see them. Newly designed, state-of-the- art sheriffs' vehicles will soon be on the road. Justice Minister Michael Baker will unveil the vehicles today, Nov. 29. They'll replace older vehicles in the department's fleet over the next four years.

The new vehicles will be clearly visible, with a number of enhanced safety features, thanks in large part to the fabrication plant of the Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Staff at the plant constructed prisoner containment compartments that will be fitted in each van and that can be removed and refitted as needed. The units are built of aluminum, making the vans much more fuel-efficient. Previously, the vans were equipped with metal bars welded into the structure, which made them unusable for any other purpose once the life-cycle of the vehicle ended. The new units are easily washable and have bullet-proof glass windows.

Along with the two vehicles unveiled today, five other replacement vans will be on the road before the end of December. It is expected that 22 vehicles will be replaced over the course of the program, which is managed through the current Court Services budget.

"The innovative approach used in constructing these vehicles will not only save money, but will enhance the safety and security of our staff and the people we transport," said Mr. Baker. "The fabrication shop put together the frame used to reconstruct Swissair 111. They have once again demonstrated their ability to find creative and imaginative solutions."
