SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Safer Pedestrian Passage for Clark's Harbour

A new sidewalk will improve pedestrian safety in Clark's Harbour due to a $177,736 project funded through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding in the amount of $118,490 was announced today, Jan. 20, by Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and by MLA Cecil O'Donnell, on behalf of Peter Christie, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Town of Clark's Harbour will fund the balance upon formal acceptance of the agreement.

"Safe, healthy environments are crucial to building strong communities and improving our quality of life," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, the government of Canada is investing in projects, like the Main Street Sidewalks project, that improve community infrastructure and support long-term growth."

One of the priorities of the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is building 21st century infrastructure and improving local transportation.

"In a busy community like Clark's Harbour, pedestrian safety is a top priority," said Mr. O'Donnell. "We've promised to work with municipal governments to fund essential infrastructure projects and we're honouring our commitment."

The Main Street Sidewalks project provides for the construction of a four-kilometre paved sidewalk along the length of Main Street. Clark's Harbour, which currently has only 300 metres of sidewalk, will be able to offer local pedestrian traffic a higher level of safety.

"We're so pleased to get the go-ahead for this project today," said Mayor Leigh Stoddart. "We all take the safety of our residents and visitors extremely seriously, and we're very happy to be able to provide them with this fundamental infrastructure."

This is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the infrastructure program. To date, 90 projects have been announced, representing an investment of more than $137 million. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a member of the management committee. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
