PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICE--Prosecution Service Opens Shubenacadie Office

The nineteenth office of the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service was officially opened this morning in Shubenacadie by Attorney General Jamie Muir.

"Having an office in Shubenacadie will mean more efficiency and effectiveness in dealing with the increasing caseload in the Shubenacadie court, a court located in the heart of one of the fastest growing parts of Nova Scotia," said Mr. Muir.

The Truro office of the Public Prosecution Service had always handled Shubenacadie files, with the Truro Crown attorneys working from a small interview room at the Shubenacadie court house. A Crown attorney was assigned full time to the Shubenacadie court in 2002 in response to the increasing caseload.

"With Shubenacadie now accounting for about 500 files annually, it was certainly time for a permanent, full-blown presence here," said Sandy Fairbanks, chief Crown attorney for the central region.

Senior Crown attorney Bob Hagell will run the office. Angela Tobin, new to the Public Prosecution Service, is the secretary.

Preparations for the new location began months ago. The fully equipped office space has two Crown attorney offices -- one for the resident Crown and another for a visiting or per diem Crown attorney -- as well as space for support staff. It also boasts an interview room, file storage room, staff area and a reception area.

The office is located at 5 Mill Village Rd. in the same building as the Shubenacadie court.
