Water Study Funding Announced

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

The Nova Scotia government has approved grants to seven municipalities to help them provide safe drinking water to their residents.

The grants, totalling more than $100,000, are part of the province's Drinking Water Strategy and will be used to help the municipalities identify areas where their water systems need improvement. The municipalities are the Halifax Regional Municipality ($50,000), Middleton ($10,000), Bridgewater ($10,000), Canso ($10,000), the Region of Queens Municipality ($7,500), Mahone Bay ($7,120) and Stewiacke ($6,670). The funding was announced today, April 17, by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Peter Christie.

"Investing in essential infrastructure such as water systems is vital to the health of Nova Scotians and for economic growth in our communities," Mr. Christie said. "Safe drinking water is often taken for granted in Nova Scotia, but the fact is we must make these investments to protect our water supply. We are working with municipalities to ensure that the water that comes out of the tap in Nova Scotia homes is as safe as any on earth."

In the 2003-04 provincial budget, $500,000 was made available to help municipalities review their water supply systems. The minister said further announcements will be made as municipal funding applications are approved.
