NATURAL RESOURCES--Code of Forest Practice Framework Available for Review

The first component of the province's Code of Forest Practice has been completed. The document, entitled A Framework for the Implementation of Sustainable Forest Management, is available for public review and comment.

The Code of Forest Practice is a government policy that will be mandatory on Crown land, becoming part of planning and operational requirements. Its use will be encouraged on all private forest lands through information and education.

The framework describes the general principles that will be the basis for planning and conducting sustainable forest management operations. Following the review and receipt of comments, guidelines and technical manuals will be developed to support the principles.

"The development of the Code of Forest Practice is one more example of government's ongoing commitment to sustainable forestry," said Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive. "The code is a key component of our Forest Strategy and will help to ensure that Nova Scotia's forests are managed wisely."

The framework document establishes key principles. Future guidebooks and technical manuals will describe how they can be implemented and provide technical references to assist in making operational forest management decisions.

"The code is a work in progress and will continue to be developed and refined over time," said the minister. "At this time, we'd like to receive public response to the principles and how they are viewed to lead to sustainable forestry in Nova Scotia."

The framework document is available on the department's Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/forestry/strategy . A printed copy of the document can be obtained by contacting the forestry division at 902-893-5715.

Comments will be received until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2. They can be submitted by any of the following methods:

  • e-mail: practico@gov.ns.ca
  • fax: 902-893-6102
  • mail: Forest Practices Code, Department of Natural Resources, P.O. Box 68, Truro, N.S., B2N 5B8.

The Code of Forest Practice is part of the Department of Natural Resources' overall Forest Strategy. The purpose of the strategy is to ensure sustainable forests in the province.
