EMERGENCY MEASURES ORGANIZATION--Local Organizations Added to Wall of Honour

The Red Cross and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary have been added to the Emergency Measures Organization's Wall of Honour. Tim Olive, Minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act, presented plaques to the organizations during a ceremony today, May 6, at Province House in Halifax.

"Volunteers are vital partners when responding to an emergency situation," said Mr. Olive. "The Red Cross and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary have demonstrated their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time and expertise at a moment's notice."

The Red Cross plays an instrumental role in disaster relief. They provide the five emergency social services: food, clothing, shelter, registration and personal services to persons left vulnerable during emergencies. Volunteers give their time freely to operate these services. For this, the Red Cross has earned a reputation of providing the human touch during times of disaster.

Celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary has 750 volunteer members and 445 vessels. With hundreds of miles of coastline throughout the Maritimes, and a limited number of government search and rescue facilities, there has been a steady reliance on volunteer services to assist those in distress at sea.

Unveiled in 2001, the Wall of Honour, is dedicated to those who have contributed to community preparedness and disaster response throughout Nova Scotia. Emergency Preparedness Week is May 4-10.
