SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Municipal, Community Projects Receiving Help

The Nova Scotia government is providing more than $750,000 to help five communities improve streets, water supplies and the environment.

Peter Christie, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, said today, May 8, that Nova Scotians living in five communities will benefit from the funding. The town of Wolfville will receive $287,500 over two years to finish reconstruction of Chestnut Avenue. The Cheticamp Main Street Enhancement project will receive $200,000 from the province to help with paving, sidewalks and storm sewers, as the community prepares for the 2004 Acadian World Congress.

The Municipality of Cumberland County is receiving $212,500 over two years to help upgrade two wastewater treatment plants in River Hebert. Other municipalities receiving assistance are Antigonish County ($45,000 to expand the Lower South River and St. Andrew's water supply) and Pictou County ($10,000 to help conduct a pollution control study for Lyons Brook).

"We're working with municipalities to build stronger, more prosperous communities in Nova Scotia," Mr. Christie said. "These projects will have immediate and lasting benefits to the residents of these communities."
