SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Wolfville Street Project Receives Funding

The Town of Wolfville will be able to complete reconstruction of one of its major streets, thanks to financial help from the Nova Scotia government.

Peter Christie, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, said the province is committing $287,500 over two years to Phase 2 of the Chestnut Avenue reconstruction. The project includes replacing underground water, sewer and storm sewer lines, paving, new sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

"This project will enable the Town of Wolfville to better serve the residents of Chestnut Avenue," Mr. Christie said. "Improving basic infrastructure leads to better, stronger communities and Wolfville residents will realize immediate benefits from this project."

Wolfville Mayor Robert Stead said a rebuilt Chestnut Avenue will result in a cleaner community and lower maintenance costs for the town.

"The new storm sewer will eliminate open ditches and the sidewalks will improve pedestrian safety in this residential area," the mayor said.

The province's contribution represents 50 per cent of the project's estimated costs. Last year, the province committed $216,500 to the first phase of the project.
