Sod Turned For New Court Facility

Justice

Port Hawkesbury's new court facility is a step closer to reality.

Justice Minister Jamie Muir and Tourism Minister Rodney MacDonald joined local dignitaries today, May 12, at an open house and sod turning.

"This marks the next step," said Mr. Muir. "We know how important this facility is for the efficient administration of justice in Inverness and Richmond counties."

The new building will be about 4,275 square metres (46,000 square feet) at an estimated project cost of $9.5 million. It will also contain offices for the Public Prosecution Service, Legal Aid, Victims' Services, Corrections and court administrative staff. Defense lawyers will have access to interview rooms for meetings with clients. The design and layout will help protect the independence of the judiciary and court system, which is a fundamental cornerstone of the administration of justice.

Mr. Muir said the province will tender for the main contractor by September. "We're on track for a completion date by late fall of next year," he said. "I know people will be impressed with the design and functional layout of the new facility."

"I want to congratulate the local courthouse users' committee," said Mr. MacDonald. "A great deal of thought and planning went into this project, and as a result, Inverness and Richmond counties will benefit for many years to come."

The Department of Justice has recently announced two other major improvement projects: a new court facility to serve Lunenburg County, and a new correctional facility in Yarmouth.
