Provincial Park Safety Warning

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians are being reminded that provincial parks have closed for the season and warned to respect the posted "closed" signs for their own safety, particularly in storm-ravaged areas in Halifax Regional Municipality and Colchester County.

"We understand the public's interest in surveying damaged areas and that's why we've set up a virtual tour on our Web site," Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt said today, Oct. 24. "An online view is a much safer way to see Hurricane Juan's impact on some of our most precious provincial resources."

Many trees were seriously weakened during the hurricane and, although still standing, may come down quickly and without warning. Other trees can spring back suddenly when debris that had them pinned down breaks or is cleared away.

Trails and boardwalks in parks and wooded areas present other risks. People can easily lose their way on trails now blocked by fallen trees and debris. In beach parks, people who try to avoid damaged boardwalks will harm the sensitive ecosystems by walking on them.

"The public's safety is our top priority and it's one that we take seriously," said Mr. Hurlburt.

Trespassers may be charged under the appropriate legislation.
