Official Opening of South Colchester Academy

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

The cameras will be rolling when South Colchester Academy in Brookfield officially opens today, Dec. 1.

Students at the new school run their own in-school television station and will be covering the opening ceremonies.

Covering events at the school could keep the students busy since community groups and individuals intend to make full use of facilities at the new school.

"We always knew South Colchester Academy would be a good school," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "But the enthusiasm of the students, staff and community have, in a very short time, turned a good school into a great school."

The $13-million school opened its doors in September and students are already making use of the many new and innovative programs and courses now available.

Besides greater choices in English, math, French and science courses, the new school also offers improved information technology programs, media courses and technical education.

Community support and involvement also led to the addition of a running track, an enhanced cafeteria/auditorium and larger gymnasium.

"The excellent support we received from local communities, businesses and individuals means South Colchester Academy can embrace a healthy, active school philosophy," said principal Jim Burns. "That will benefit students during and after school, their parents and members of the public who are already using the facilities we have to offer."

More than 820 students in grades seven to 12 attend the school.
