Sod Turned for New Shelburne High School

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

After a lot of hard work and planning, people in the Shelburne area are celebrating as construction begins on a new $12 million high school.

Students and teachers will move into the new Shelburne Regional High School next September. The school can accommodate up to 570 students in Grades 7 to 12.

Education Minister Jamie Muir joined school, board and community representatives today, Dec. 8, to turn the sod for the new building.

"Through its school steering team, this community has worked very closely and co-operatively with the department to plan an excellent school and community facility," said Mr. Muir. "It's a perfect example of government and communities working together to meet both student and community needs."

The new Shelburne Regional High School will feature a regulation- size, eight-lane running track that will be available for school and community use. The school steering team raised more than $300,000 to add the track and other enhancements to the school.

"Shelburne Regional High has a strong history as a community of dedicated learners and leaders," said Bonnie Mahaney, principal and co-chair of the school steering team. "We have a fine group of students, staff and parents. Our new school will reflect and enhance this school community and provide outstanding educational opportunities and initiatives."

The school will have 18 classrooms, and other support rooms such as science labs, music and art rooms and a family studies area. There will be a library, a larger gymnasium and a cafeteria, which the existing school doesn't have. The new school will also have a large technology production area and a performance space.
