TOURISM/CULTURE AND HERITAGE--Province Invests in Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament

The province continues to invest in Glace Bay's biggest annual sporting event.

The Vince Ryan Memorial Scholarship Hockey Tournament is one of the largest adult hockey tournaments in Canada, with 140 teams from across North America participating. The event is held every March and generates about $3 million for the local economy.

"This is a big event for Glace Bay and one of the biggest winter sporting events in the province," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "For 15 years, hundreds of volunteers in Glace Bay and surrounding area have worked hard to ensure the tournament is enjoyed by all of the participants."

This year the province is investing $5,000 through the Tourism Partnership Council's Destination Opportunities Program. The funding is administered through Tourism Cape Breton.

Proceeds from the tournament are used to build a Glace Bay High School scholarship fund.
