Road Work Planned for Highway 105

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

More than seven kilometres of Highway 105 near Highway 125 will be repaved this summer, work that will result in smoother rides and a stronger economy to residents of Cape Breton.

The repaving work, from Groves Point exit east to the Highway 125 interchange, including ramps at Highway 125, totals about 7.2 kilometres. The work is to be completed by June 30 to avoid construction delays during the summer tourism season.

"Highway investments such as these provide a real benefit to the people of Cape Breton and help ensure that our goods and services are able to move quickly to markets inside and outside the province," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works.

The tender for this work was advertised recently. It closes Wednesday, April 7.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.

Government spent $88.5 million on Cape Breton roads and bridges over the last five years.
