Nova Scotians Celebrate National Wildlife Week

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotians can celebrate National Wildlife Week, April 4-10, in their own backyard. The theme for 2004 is "give backyard birds something to sing about".

"Every year we recognize some facet of our wildlife resources," said Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt. "This year's theme brings it home as most Nova Scotians have the opportunity to see birds in their natural habitat in their own yards and neighbourhoods. Birds play a vital role in the health of our ecosystem, so encouraging their presence around our properties makes sense."

National Wildlife Week highlights the different things Canadians can do to make their backyards more attractive to birds. For example, you can plant berry bushes and fruit-producing trees and shrubs, build birdhouses for birds to nest in, provide bird baths as a drinking and bathing source, erect bird feeders and much more. For more information on what you can do for backyard birds visit the Department of Natural Resources website at www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/ .

National Wildlife Week is sponsored by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, a non-profit, non-government organization. The week takes place each year around April 10, which was the birthday of Jack Miner, a pioneer in Canada's conservation movement. It was proclaimed in 1947 by Parliament to celebrate our natural heritage.
