SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--New Minas Welcomes Infrastructure Project
Residents of Greenwich, Kings Co., can look forward to a safe, reliable source of water for their homes thanks to a project announced today, May 1, through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.
The Village of New Minas is partnering with the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia through the Infrastructure Program, to extend its water service four kilometres into the neighbouring community of Greenwich. The new water main will serve 140 households that are currently experiencing water quality and quantity problems. The project will have the added benefit of improving fire protection to the community.
"This investment will make an important contribution to the quality of life in the community of Greenwich," said Minister of Community Services David Morse, speaking on behalf of Barry Barnet, Minister of Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This is another example of how governments, working in partnership, help make projects like this one a reality."
Designed to invest in the infrastructure needs of Nova Scotia communities, the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program's priorities include supporting long-term economic growth, community infrastructure improvements and environmental enhancements, and building 21st century infrastructure.
"Nova Scotians want to live in healthy, safe, environments they can be proud of," said Member of Parliament Scott Brison. "Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, the government of Canada is working with Nova Scotians to build strong communities and improve our quality of life by investing in the kinds of infrastructure projects such as the one we are announcing today."
Mr. Morse and Mr. Brison announced their total joint federal- provincial investment of $549,862 today. The Village of New Minas will fund the balance of the project costs bringing the project total to $824,793.
"This project will enable our municipality to extend our supply of safe drinking water to our neighbours in Greenwich, thereby building infrastructure that will benefit both our communities as we continue to grow," said Marvin Messom, vice-chair of the New Minas Village Commission. "This Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is a unique vehicle that successfully allows governments to work together to achieve a common goal -- to make Nova Scotia communities the best they can be."
To date, more than $168 million has been invested in 114 projects, across the province through the program, and more announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.
The program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a member of the management committee. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
