National Police Week

Justice

Justice Minister Michael Baker invites Nova Scotians to take part in events to mark Police Week, held this year from May 9 to May 16.

"Each year, events put on by various police agencies help forge stronger partnerships with the communities they serve," said Mr. Baker. "We all share responsibility for the safety of our communities. It's important to acknowledge the many contributions of the dedicated men and women of law enforcement."

During Police Week, community groups join police forces to arrange special activities and displays that promote enhanced public safety and security.

"Building relationships is effective community policing," added Mr. Baker. "Strong community ties help prevent crime. I want to thank our peace officers for all they do throughout the year to make Nova Scotia one of the safest places to live in North America."

Staff from sheriff services and the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility will take part in the Police Week 2004 event at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.

Correctional workers will display a model of the Burnside facility. They will also conduct mock exercises showing how a prisoner is safely removed from a cell and how qualified staff would use a Taser gun to manage a difficult prisoner.

The mock exercises are open to the public at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13 and Friday, May 14, and again at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
