SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Municipal, School Board Election Candidates Guide Available

So you're considering taking a run at municipal council or the local school board in this October's elections, but don't know how to go about it. The essential information you need is now available in a comprehensive guide for first time and incumbent candidates.

The Candidates Guide to Municipal and School Board Elections is available on the Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations website at www.servicens.ca/candidates . The guide covers topics ranging from who is qualified to run (at least 18 years of age, Canadian citizen and resident for at least six months in the municipality or school district), to when candidates must remove their campaign signs (within seven days after the election).

"This guide has a wealth of information that everyone thinking about throwing their hat in the ring should read," said Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Barry Barnet. "The guide takes people through almost everything they need to know about becoming a candidate, voting procedures, responsibilities of elected members, and even how to apply for a recount."

Municipal council and school board elections are scheduled for Oct. 16. In addition to information on a wide-range of topics, there is also information specific to elections for African Nova Scotian members of regional or district boards and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial.

"Being a member of a municipal council or a school board can be a very rewarding way to give back to your community," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "This candidates guide is a well written and easily understood reference on what the job is about and what will be expected of candidates, before and after election day."
