Deadline Extended For Canso

Barry Barnet, minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, has agreed to extend the July 29 deadline regarding Canso's town status. The minister will meet with Canso Mayor Frank Fraser in the next few weeks to discuss the town's future.

"I am intrigued by Mr. Fraser's suggestion that the residents and taxpayers get a chance to voice their opinion through a plebiscite," said Mr. Barnet. "I have asked staff to explore this option with town officials."

"We need to find a long-term solution to Canso's financial issues and we need to do that soon," said Mr. Barnet. "This planned meeting effectively relaxes the July 29 deadline but it remains an urgent file with my office."
