Committee to Review Off-highway Vehicle Report

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The Department of Natural Resources will co-ordinate an interdepartmental committee to review Voluntary Planning's off- highway vehicle task force report, released today, Nov. 2.

The report makes 39 recommendations that focus on enforcement, safety, protection of property, appropriate designation of trails and uniform standards for off-highway vehicles in Nova Scotia.

Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt thanked members of the task force who put the report together on behalf of Nova Scotians. He said, "the issues surrounding the use of off-highway vehicles in this province are many, varied and complex. Theirs was a complicated task and they worked diligently to find the balance."

The committee will be made up of key departments that will have a role in putting together the province's response to the report. Members will review the document and put together a plan of action based on its recommendations.

"In the interest of public safety, we all agree that matters such as licensing and enforcement have to be addressed," said Mr. Hurlburt. "We need to address priority items in the context of current resources and to identify the resources needed to implement other elements."

The interdepartmental committee will be in place by the end of November.
