TOURISM, CULTURE AND HERITAGE--Centre for Art Tapes Awarded $10,000 Art Prize

The Centre for Art Tapes is this year's winner of the $10,000 Aliant New Media Prize. The prize was awarded today, Dec. 10, at the digital animation department of the Nova Scotia Community College, Truro campus.

"Aliant believes it is important to recognize and support exceptional talent in the region," said Don MacKay, the northeastern Nova Scotia regional manager, with Aliant. "Congratulations to all the staff at the Centre for Art Tapes. Your hard work and dedication to emerging and established artists over the past two decades is an inspiration to us all."

The Centre for Art Tapes is a community-based, non-profit, artist-run facility. It provides independent artists, producers, and the community with access to video, audio and computer equipment, facilities and services.

The centre received the award to establish a new media production studio so artists can incorporate sensors, interactive robotics and software programming in their artwork. The new studio will serve as a resource centre for artists to meet and collaborate.

The $10,000 award, administered by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage recognizes art projects that focus on media interactivity directly using computing and communications technologies.

"The Centre for Art Tapes is an excellent example of the growth and potential of new media technologies," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "We're pleased to partner with Aliant to bring this prize to Nova Scotia's arts community."

"We are absolutely ecstatic about being the recipient of the Aliant New Media Prize," said Ilan Sandler, executive director of the Centre for Art Tapes. "We are very excited about using it to further develop our programs for new media and better serve the diverse needs of the membership. We acknowledge the importance of support from the community and industry's ability to foster creativity within our organization."

As in previous years, a committee was assembled to review all Aliant New Media Prize applicants. This committee included individuals who have strong credentials and experience in new media and the arts, and are recognized for their commitment to advancing the arts in Nova Scotia.
