TOURISM, CULTURE AND HERITAGE--Sydney's Cruise Pavilion Promotes Cape Breton

Visitors to Sydney's new cruise pavilion will soon be learning about the culture, heritage and tourist attractions of Cape Breton Island.

Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister, Rodney MacDonald, announced today, March 4, an investment of $259,800 for the Sydney Ports Corporation to develop and enhance interpretative components within the new Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion. The interpretation project will complement a major renovation recently undertaken at the port.

"This support will help provide visitors with a first look at Cape Breton's natural beauty, diverse heritage and world renowned music," said Mr. MacDonald. "It will help entice visitors to spend more time and take full advantage of all the island has to offer."

The one-time grant will be used to complete a Cape Breton Island interpretive facility within the larger pavilion, which includes development and enhancement of interpretive exhibits, and completion of the Lighthouse Theatre.

"This interpretation project will not only serve as a tourist attraction for Sydney, but will also enable us to present the rich culture and heritage of Cape Breton," said Stephen Kavanagh, chair of the Sydney Ports Corporation.

Today's investment is part of $15 million in funding announced by Mr. MacDonald in December 2004. That funding is designed to help boost Nova Scotia's tourism industry in the areas of marketing, product development, and regional tourism initiatives.
