PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICES--Legal Eagles and Legislators Take To The Rink

Forget the hallowed court rooms and legislative chambers; the legal minds that usually populate them are taking it to the rink! The hockey rink that is.

Nova Scotia Crown attorneys, criminal defence lawyers, judges and MLAs are facing off this weekend (April 16-17) at the Halifax Forum in the first annual Glube Cup Charity Hockey Tournament -- a hockey tournament that promises to be like no other.

Teams will battle to see who rules on the ice, with the winner taking home the Glube Cup -- named in honour of recently retired Nova Scotia Chief Justice Constance Glube.

A non-perishable food item or a cash donation to Feed Nova Scotia is the cost of admission.

"It's all for fun and for a good cause," says tournament organizer Frank Hoskins, Halifax chief Crown attorney. "We want to take our spirit of collegiality and friendly competition and use it to help others.

"The only real winner here is Feed Nova Scotia. But, the judges are rumoured to have the best bench," he laughs.

Last year in a one-game effort, Crown attorneys and defence lawyers faced off. The game ended in a tie but everybody had so much fun they decided to expand the event into a weekend tournament. And next year, Mr. Hoskins says, the event will be even bigger with a total of 10 teams on the slate.

Spectators are welcome. The tournament gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16, with judges and MLAs facing off. At 7:30 p.m. Crown attorneys play defence lawyers. On Sunday evening the consolation game begins at 6 p.m. with teams vying for third place. At 7:30 p.m. the championship game gets underway. The Glube Cup will be awarded at the end of the game.
