Province Supports Cultural Activities

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Nova Scotians and visitors to the province will have more opportunities to enjoy cultural activities in our communities, thanks to ongoing investments by the province.

Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister Rodney MacDonald announced today, Aug. 8, that a total of $88,373 will be provided to support 22 cultural activities across the province.

"This funding represents on ongoing commitment by the province to develop and support activities that reflect our unique culture in Nova Scotia," said Mr. MacDonald. "By supporting these events, festivals and workshops, we can ensure that our culture will be preserved and celebrated."

Mr. MacDonald made the announcement at the Waycobah First Nation. The band will receive $5,000 to help with its fifth annual Alex Michael Memorial Pow Wow. The powwow will include traditional ceremonies, feasts, activities and events this coming weekend (Aug. 13-14).

"We're very pleased the province is providing funding to support this event," said Norma Gould, Brighter Futures co-ordinator and Pow Wow Committee president. "It provides an important opportunity for our band to celebrate and share our culture with the local community and visitors to the area."

The Cultural Activities Program invested $346,491 in 84 projects across Nova Scotia last year. The projects announced today are the first to receive funding this fiscal year.
