Province Transfers Land to Stellarton

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Stellarton will have more land available for recreational and economic development purposes thanks to a transfer of Crown land by the province.

Premier John Hamm announced today, Sept. 21, that about 265 hectares (655 acres) will be transferred to the town in three phases.

"Our decision to transfer these lands is the result of the vision and the dedication of the local government," said Premier Hamm. "It stands as a model for what can be achieved when provincial and local governments work together to meet the needs of the community."

"This land transfer will provide for continued economic development, and future recreational and municipal uses for the people of this community," said Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt. "When this transaction is completed, Stellarton will have more property for commercial, industrial and residential use."

About one-third of the total land will be transferred in the near future, after surveying is completed. Subsequent phases of the land transfer will take place when coal extraction and remediation are completed by the leasing company, Pioneer Coal; and after remediation is approved by the departments of Environment and Labour and Natural Resources.

"Stellarton welcomes this announcement," said Mayor Art Fitt. "Our town is growing and we have plans for it to grow even more. I am pleased that Premier Hamm and Mr. Hurlburt share our dreams and ambitions for this community."
