Possible Fraud Referred to Police

Justice

The Department of Justice has referred a case of possible fraud to the Halifax Regional Police Service. An external forensic audit will be conducted to support the police investigation.

An employee with the Maintenance Enforcement Program is alleged to have defrauded the department of up to $200,000. The employee has been terminated.

The Maintenance Enforcement Program is responsible for the collection and enforcement of maintenance payments under court orders. It is believed that the money came from administrative fees paid to government, and not money owed to families.

The program's financial processes are being reviewed and action taken to help prevent this kind of situation in the future. All necessary steps will be taken to recover the missing funds.
