Outdoor Skills for Women

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Nova Scotia women can participate in an international program to enjoy the winter weather, learn outdoor skills and try new activities.

The winter session of Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) will introduce women to some of the fun and unique activities that come with this time of year. Some of the classes offered include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, identifying and cooking wild edibles in winter and preparing for emergencies.

"Women who participate in the winter session of BOW will have the opportunity to improve their winter outdoor skills and meet others who are taking decisive steps to make the outdoors part of their lifestyle," said Judy Clattenburg, co-ordinator for the program in Nova Scotia. "This is also the perfect opportunity for them to try new activities in a safe environment and without having to purchase recreational equipment. We provide all equipment and materials."

The workshop is open to women 18 years of age or older. It will be held at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts in St. Anns, Victoria Co., from Friday, Feb. 17, to Sunday, Feb. 19. The workshop costs $199, which includes meals, accommodations, equipment and HST. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is an international program, that is offered in 44 states and six provinces. It was started to eliminate barriers that prevented women from participating in outdoor activities. The program is offered in Nova Scotia through the Department of Natural Resources, Nova Scotia Health Promotion, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Cross Country Ski Nova Scotia.
