Town of Westville Receives Infrastructure Funding

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Residents in the Town of Westville, Pictou Co., will have improved water and wastewater systems, thanks to funding through the new Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

The project includes the design and construction of an extension of Westville's water and wastewater system to 24 households on Foxbrook Road. These households are currently served by aging and malfunctioning on-site water and septic systems. Two local businesses will also benefit from the project.

Federal and provincial funding of $256,252 was announced today, May 10. The Town of Westville will fund the balance upon formal acceptance of the agreement and environmental assessment approval.

"Our government understands the challenges communities face in securing the infrastructure they need to develop and prosper," said Peter MacKay, federal Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "We will continue to work with communities such as Westville on projects that help ensure quality of life."

"This project will help improve the quality of life for residents in Westville and represents what's important to individual Nova Scotia communities," said Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "Meeting provincial and municipal priorities such as upgrading water and wastewater systems is integral to enhancing community infrastructure."

The new infrastructure program supports community infrastructure improvements, such as water, wastewater, and solid waste management.

"The good health and safety of Westville residents is our top priority," said Sandy Cyr, mayor of the Town of Westville. "Upgrading our water and wastewater systems is paramount to retaining Westville’s quality of life."

The $111 million, six-year Canada-Nova Scotia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities are members of the management committee.
