JUSTICE--New Tools to Deter Criminals

  • ---------------------------------------------------------------People who use a motor vehicle in the commission of an offence or who steal gas will lose their drivers' licences, under legislation that takes effect on Saturday, July 1.

"This legislation helps ensure that people convicted under the Criminal Code are held accountable for their actions," said Justice Minister Murray Scott. "Those who steal gas or use a vehicle to commit a crime will now face the suspension of their licence and other penalties."

Under An Act to Further Discourage Criminal Offences Involving the Use of a Motor Vehicle, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles will be notified when someone convicted of a crime has used a motor vehicle to commit the offence, leading to the suspension of the person's licence.

The act also requires the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to revoke the licence of a driver convicted under the Criminal Code for stealing gasoline or diesel fuel.

"This legislation enhances the penalties and should serve as a deterrent to anyone contemplating similar crimes," said Mr. Scott.
