Safer Streets and Communities Task Force Meetings Begin

Justice

The Minister's Task Force on Safer Streets and Communities wants Nova Scotians to have their say on preventing and addressing crime.

Public meetings are being held this month and in March to hear the public's views on community safety.

"We know the roots of solutions often lie in the experience and expertise of people directly involved at the local level," said Justice Minister Murray Scott. "We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers to gather ideas and input from their fellow Nova Scotians."

The minister's task force was launched in December with the announcement of a diverse group of 25 volunteers from across the province. The task force is gathering information on community programs, government services, legislation and policing programs that are making a positive difference in communities.

"Nova Scotia is filled with committed, caring people who know what will work in their communities," said task force co-chair Oralee O'Byrne. "This is a unique opportunity to hear from these citizens directly, and we hope to get the input of as many people as possible."

The task force will submit a report to the minister of justice in May. The information will be used to help create a provincial crime prevention strategy.

"We look forward to hearing from people at the community level who are concerned about crime in their community," said task force co-chair and Halifax Regional Police Chief Frank Beazley. "We are anxious to get their views on how we can work together to make our communities as safe as possible."
