Director of Public Safety Appointed

Justice

A former superintendent with Halifax Regional Police will lead the province's new Public Safety Investigation Unit.

Fred Sanford has been appointed as the Director of Public Safety and will oversee the unit which, under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, can investigate and shut down a property if suspected illegal activity is taking place.

"Mr. Sanford is a respected and dedicated police officer with over 29 years experience with the Halifax Regional Police," said Justice Minister Murray Scott. "We are extremely pleased that he has agreed to take a leadership role in our effort to help communities crack down on crime."

Mr. Sanford has extensive experience in operational policing, criminal investigations, administration and management. Most recently, he led the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division for the Halifax Regional Police.

"I am honoured to lead the development and implementation of this exciting new initiative," said Mr. Sanford. "In my experience as a police officer I have observed, first hand, how criminal activity can disrupt the peace and safety of neighbourhoods.

"I look forward to working with our communities to ensure this new legislation and the investigative unit are utilized effectively to increase public safety."

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act improves community safety by targeting and, if necessary, shutting down residential and commercial buildings and land that is regularly used for illegal activities. Such activities include producing, selling or using illegal drugs, prostitution, illegal gaming or the unlawful sale and consumption of alcohol.

This legislation gives citizens the tools to take back their neighbourhoods by reporting problem residences and businesses. It also holds property owners accountable for threatening or disturbing activities regularly taking place on their property.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act was proclaimed in January. It is anticipated that the investigative unit will be operational in April. Citizens who have complaints can call 1-877-35-SAFER (72337).

Mr. Sanford was the successful candidate after a competition in late 2006.
